Ministries
ADULT FORUM
Each Sunday from September to May, we gather to explore the Christian faith in-depth. In the past we have studied numerous books of the Bible. We have also focused on the Second Coming of Christ, Bible interpretation, New Age thought, interfaith dialogue, and church history. Watching and discussing videos provides an alternative to traditional formats. Some of these have been on early Christianity, the Reformation, the life of Jesus, near death experiences, and several other topics. The forum meets from about 11:45-12:45.
BIBLE STUDY/POTLUCKS
Once a month, usually on the third Wednesday, we share a potluck meal and then explore the Scriptures together. The pastor leads these sessions and encourages a free flowing interaction among the participants. The studies apply timeless spiritual truths to life today and close with time for prayer. Members of Community Church love to cook (and eat!) The table nearly overflows with a wide variety of delicious foods. The spirit at these midweek gatherings is always enthusiastic, welcoming, and inquisitive. Dinner is served at 6 p.m., followed by the program until 7:30.
LENTEN BREAKFASTS
Beginning on Ash Wednesday, we gather at 7:30 a.m. once a week for Lenten devotions. A simple breakfast is provided, along with a scriptural meditation by the pastor or lay leader. These times of spiritual centering help us focus on Jesus’ forty days of trial in the wilderness and his journey to the cross.
WOMAN’S SOCIETY
The Woman’s Society meets monthly and sponsors programs of education, study, and outreach. Guest speakers have addressed topics such as hunger, aging, stress management, relationships, and many other concerns. Some of the women have knitted over a thousand wool caps for the children of Romania. The Woman’s Society also gives support to the needy at home and in foreign lands.
WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP
Begun by deacon Cheryl Williams in 2002, the Women’s Christian Fellowship meets monthly for study and mutual support. Working women find the group especially helpful because it meets at night. A recent discussion topic was “becoming a woman of purpose.” The friendships formed in the mutual quest for spiritual growth become deeply meaningful.
FELLOWSHIP EVENTS
The people of Community Church love to have fun! Dinners, desserts, picnics, and brunches bring us together in informal ways. We are also known for our creativity in planning special fellowship events. Stories about the progressive dinner that transformed the assembly hall, parlor, and narthex into five star restaurants abound. An accordion player serenaded us with authentic Italian music on Neapolitan Night. The “tacky party” featured members in funny clothes eating Spam and singing to ukulele accompaniment. The “nostalgia party” tested how well we remembered the 1940s and ‘50s. But first in the women’s hearts is the annual Mother’ Day Breakfast, completely prepared and served by the men.
MISSION TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Beginning in 1994, our congregation has sent a mission team to La Romana in the Dominican Republic each year. These teams have helped to construct the Good Samaritan Hospital, the only source of medical care for the people of that area. Many of these people work in the sugar cane fields and live in shantytowns called “bateys.” Organized by Dr. Elihu Wing, Jr., our teams take medicines and clothing to La Romana and provide medical care to those who live in the bateys. This has been a deeply meaningful ministry for the mission workers, for the congregation, and for our brothers and sisters in the Dominican Republic.
CHANCEL CHOIR
Composed of volunteers and anchored by a quartet of professional section leaders, the Chancel Choir provides an outstanding music ministry to Community Church. Through its ministry, those who love to sing share their musical gifts to the glory of God. Rehearsals are held each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 9:45 a.m. under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Laurent. New voices and faces are always welcome.
